The artist and multi award winning film director, Julian Schnabel, has donated a work to the GSA auction that will take place in New York tonight.  Glasgow School of Art Needs You  is a specially made collage layering a handpainted message over printed images and articles on the artist.
Schnabel first came to public attention as an artist with a solo show in 1979 before going on to the Venice Biennale in 1980. He has since become a major voice in American art. His paintings are held in public and private collections across the world including Metropolitan Museum; the Museum of Modern Art; the Guggehiem Museum, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.
In addition to his work as an artist Schnabel has written and directed a number of award-winning films including Before Night Falls and The Diving Bell and Butterfly for which he was OSCAR nominated. The film also won him the Best Director award at prestigious Cannes Film Festival, a Golden Globe (Best Director) and an Independent Spirit Award (Best Director).
In 2007 Schnabel designed Lou Reed’s “Berlin” tour and directed the associated film, Berlin, The Movie.
It speaks volumes about Glasgow School of Art’s standing within the international art world that an artist as celebrated as Julian Schnabel has created this unique work specifically for the Gala auction in NYC,” says Alasdair Nichol, Vice Chairman FREEMAN’S auctioneers. “I look forward to an exciting evening of bidding.”
“It is wonderful news that Julian has donated a work to tonight’s auction,” adds Prof. Tom Inns, Director of The Glasgow School of Art. “We are hugely grateful to all the people who have so generously donated works to both the silent and public auctions to help us in our efforts to recover from the fire and bring the Mackintosh Building back as the heart of our expanded Garnethill Campus.”

We would like to
extend our special thanks to Angela McCluskey – singer/songwriter and friend of
the GSA for helping GSA to receive this donation,”
adds Prof. Tom Inns.

Angela McCluskey will be performing at the event in New York this evening.

The GSA has launched the Mackintosh
Campus Appeal in the US this week with a range of events in NYC including a
lecture last night by leading Mackintosh authority, Prof. Pamela Robertson, and
tonight’s gala dinner and auction. It was revealed earlier this week that items
made by the joint heads of Silversmithing & Jewellery at the GSA , Helen
Marriott and Anna Gordon, incorporating material from the Mackintosh Building,
and a limited edition photograph of the Beatles with Ali by Harry Benson were
among the lots in the auctions.
