Third year Painting and Printmaking student Lili Eichinger has won a cartoon competition run by Glasgow-based property fund manager Keills. Lili was awarded £200 for her response to the brief – a drawing or painting in a cartoon or caricature style depicting a current economic issue, to be used in a forthcoming advert in the quarterly publication napfnews (National Association of Pension Funds) and also on the Keills website.

Lili commented: ‘It was a great feeling to win this competition. I liked the idea of the brief, that Keills would like to have something satirical, because in my art practice I am keen to use satirical or sarcastic images/texts. So it was a perfect opportunity to apply for. I also entered the competition because I am interested in economic questions and problems (especially as these affect all markets and therefore have an impact on the art market). I think it’s a good challenge to bring art and economic problems “together”, and to explore what kind of conversation is possible between them. I was very grateful to get Andy’s review and feedback. It’s made me feel that I definitely don’t want to miss out on any competitions like this in the future.’

Libby Anson, Student Employability and Enterprise Manager at the GSA, said: ‘The beauty of the opportunity that Keills presented to our students here at The Glasgow School of Art was that it was a very simple, straightforward brief. It offered a challenge combining freedom of artistic approach with a concise and clear outcome. This meant that any student from across the School, irrespective of programme of study, who had a flair for drawing and a sense of wit, could have a go and produce something prize-worthy relatively quickly.’

Andy Speedie from Keills said: ‘This has been an enjoyable, educational and rewarding experience and we will certainly repeat the competition next year.’
