“We are
delighted that colleagues from Copenhagen and Cologne will be joining us in Forres
with groups of their students at our first ever Winter School,” says Dr Gordon Hush, Head
of Product Design and Programme Director at the Institute of Design Innovation
(InDI) at The Glasgow School of Art. “The
Glasgow School of Art regularly works with art and design schools across the
globe. Collaboration with our overseas colleagues at The Winter School will
enrich the experience both for the students and for the communities with which
we will be working.”

“The Winter School will bring international as well as local perspectives to
issues facing the Hebrides. Over the two weeks the students will work
collaboratively with people from the Hebrides, design academics and
contributors from economic and political life to jointly identify areas where
design and innovation could help improve life in island communities.”

David
Oxley, HIE area manager in Moray, said: “A
strong university sector is essential for a successful region. The Creative Futures
Partnership between HIE and GSA is an excellent example in that respect. The
establishment of the first Winter School in the region is a great step forward
for the partnership, with a range of students and universities coming to the
region to undertake research in collaboration with local partners. It is a sign
of the great work this unique partnership can deliver for the region.”

“I am very, very
excited about participating in the Winter School,” says Professor Eva Brandt of KADK, Copenhagen. “It
will give both design students and faculty members from three different
countries valuable time to explore a common theme together, exchange
experiences and learn from each other. It is not very often that we have these
opportunities.”

forward to going to Scotland and being part of this unique international
collaboration. Although we are only at the beginning of 2016 I have the feeling
that this event will be one of the highlights of this year.”

“We are particularly excited to explore how designers use both
conceptual skills and craftsmanship to inquire into problems of ‘the real
world’ and employ prompts, probes and prototypes to raise new questions often
in direct collaboration with non-designers. This is the territory for a new
generation of socially aware designers.
