The Glasgow School of Art to launch international search for Director
  • The search will be led by the Board of Governors
  • Staff, students, alumni and stakeholders will be involved in the process
  • Interviews are expected to take place in early 2020




Final year Fashion Design Student, Melody Ramsay, who beat global competition to secure a prestigious internship working with Senior Designer Tess Sullivan at Ralph Lauren NY over the summer.

The Glasgow School of Art is to begin an international search for a permanent Director in the coming weeks it was announced today, Monday 7 October 2019. The announcement was made following a meeting of the Board of Governors who will oversee the process with involvement of staff, students, alumni and external stakeholders.

“The Glasgow School of Art is one of the world’s top ten Art Schools with a student body drawn from across the globe and graduates making an impact at home and overseas,”says Professor Nora Kearney, Chair of the Board of Governors. “Today I am announcing that in the next few weeks we will be launching an international search for a Director who will  reflect the GSA’s international position.”

“We are seeking someone who is passionate about creative education and who understands the crucial importance of The Glasgow School of Art both to Glasgow, one of the world’s leading creative cities, and to Scotland. The Director we appoint, will have the vision to take us forward in the next phase of our development maintaining and extending our position as one of the world’s leading creative higher education institutions.”

“The Board of Governors will lead the search with staff, students, alumni and stakeholder on the selection panel.”

Interviews are expected to take place early in 2020. Professor Irene McAra-McWilliam, who was appointed as Interim Director for 12-months from November 2018, will stay in post until the conclusion of the selection process and an appointment is made.

It was also announced today that GSA Product Design Engineering graduate, David Law, who took Silicon Valley-based Speck from start up to a $70m business has been appointed as an Honorary Professor. David is currently CEO of Drown Audio of one of Scotland’s leading creative businesses.
