The iconic medals for
the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games will be designed by award-winning maker and
jeweller Jonathan Mathew Boyd, a graduate of the celebrated Glasgow School and
Art, the Organising Committee revealed today (Friday 6 December 2013).

Designed especially for each Games, the medals
are what every athlete from across the Commonwealth will strive to win and will
form a unique piece of Commonwealth Games history.

Boyd, 29, graduated from the GSA with First Class
Honours in Silversmithing and Jewellery and went to study for an MA at the
Royal College of Art. Now a lecturer at the GSA, he is also the winner of many
prestigious awards and grants, including the Donald Dewar award for exceptional
Scottish talent.

Earlier this month he
won the silver prize at 2013 Beijing International Contemporary Metal Art Exhibition:
Pushing Boundaries & Chasing Challenges with Clyde Built, a collection of oxidised silver jewellery.

David Grevemberg, Chief Executive of Glasgow 2014
said:

“Each and every one of the thousands of athletes who will compete at the
Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games will all have the same aspiration – to perform
at their best and become a prestigious medal winner. Medals, whether Gold,
Silver or Bronze, are a strong symbol of the Games and a unique piece of
sporting history. For many, they will be the ultimate reward for years of
dedication to their sport.

“The Glasgow School of Art is a world-class institution yet remains an
integral part of the fabric of this great city, steeped in history and a place
that has been the starting point for many artists and designers for more than a
century.

“I’m delighted to have Jonathan’s incredible creative talent on board
and I know he will bring something truly unique to the Games. I am excited to
see his final designs and have no doubt that the Glasgow 2014 medals will be something
truly special.”

said:

“I love the city of Glasgow and have lived here for most of my adult
life; to be given this important opportunity and to showcase my admiration for
the city is both humbling and extremely exciting.

“I have always thought of Glasgow as a unique and special place – one
that thinks and does things differently. I hope in my design I can reflect
Glasgow’s industrial past, capture something of the city that it’s become and
most importantly capture that uniqueness that Glasgow has.”
Professor
Tom Inns, Director of The Glasgow School of Art, said:

“It is an honour and
a privilege that one of our Silversmithing and Jewellery lecturers has been
commissioned to design the medals for the 2014 Commonwealth Games. Jonathan is
an incredibly talented maker and jeweller.
I know that he will create a fascinating and innovative design for the
medals that Glasgow and the Commonwealth will be proud of.”

Full details of the Glasgow 2014 medal ceremonies, including what the
medals will look like, will be unveiled next year.
