GSA 4th year
Fashion Design student, Morag Seaton, has won a prestigious John Byrne Award. The
awards, which recognize work made by young people between the ages of 16 and 25
living and working in Scotland, were presented in a packed ceremony on the
evening of Friday 16 February 2018.

Morag Seaton: Garment Stories
22-year old Morag was
winner of the Writing Award for Garment Stories, a book of illustrated interviews which follows the
relationship between people and their clothes. Each person was asked about
their most valued garments and the reasons for their attachment. The
conversations told much about the individual’s identity and values, and most
often the stories spoke of hand-me-downs, significant memories and clothing
from loved ones.
“The relationship we have with our clothing is personal and
ever-changing, yet the simplicity of a worn garment is something we all have in
common,”
writes Morag. “Each
garment can provide an insight to identity, behaviour, gender differences, age,
occupational roles, culture, religion and wealth.”
“Today, the need to find value in our things is essential given the
detrimental effects of obsolete design, consumption and textile waste on
society and the environment. Garment Stories’ encourages conversations of
garment ‘use’ and understanding. It asks us to find value in our things,
to discourage the view of clothing as a disposable item, and to consider the
responsibility of the wearer.”
Garment Stories’ was
described by the judges as  “a succinct
and powerful examination of what our clothes and the way we treat them say about
our values in modern society, showcasing multiple skills – drawing, writing,
interviewing, book-binding.”
Morag
was presented with her award by the acclaimed artist and playwright, John
Byrne, who studied at The Glasgow School of Art between 1958 and 1963.
