Group session at 2016 Winter School. Participants in 2017 Winter School will use group sessions to develop their ideas following presentations by and visits to local businesses and community groups
In the
first week, students will hear presentations from businesses across Moray and
will visit the companies’ sites to see their processes first hand. These talks
will provide inspiration to the students as they explore the wider themes of
Winter School. Students will then carry out their group projects over the
fortnight will be expected to present their findings and ideas back to academic
experts and the businesses and community leaders.
“Winter
School is an opportunity for international students and design experts to come
together to address issues that have both a local and international resonance,”
says Dr Gordon
Hush, Acting Director of the GSA’s Institute of Design Innovation. “The ongoing work being undertaken
researchers based at the GSA’s Highlands and Island’s Creative Campus brings
together academics with local businesses and communities. We are particularly
pleased that this year a dozen local businesses and community groups will also
be involved in Winter School. Their participation will enable the students to
develop ideas which are firmly rooted in the local context, but which have
wider international applications.”
Professor
Eva Brandt, of KADK, said: “What I
especially love about Winter School is that it is an opportunity for reflection
and learning, for teachers and students alike. It is a special chance for
educators from three different European institutions to join forces and for
students to collaborate in cross-disciplinary teams on a specific project. It is
seldom that such opportunities for sharing
practice occur. We are grateful to The Glasgow School of Art for making
this happen.”
Professor Philip Heidkamp, of KISD, said: “GSA Winter School in Forres is a fantastic chance
to work in international design teams from different cultural and educational
backgrounds on a shared topic. I am looking forward to seeing different
stakeholders of civil society, culture and economy being part of this
participatory process.”
Winter
School is an example of GSA’s particular method of learning and teaching. It
offers an opportunity to examine the role of design in addressing contemporary
challenges. The pioneering event helps to build collaborative relationships
with design schools, business agencies and communities, as well as providing a
boost to the local economy.
The GSA
also announced today that the official launch of its new Highlands and Islands
Campus on the Altyre Estate would take place on 20 January.
