Statement re the Sunday Post’s failure to report facts and evidence around asbestos within buildings on Sunday 17 November 2019.
Hundreds of thousands of people live and work in buildings constructed in the first half of the 20th century which involved the use of asbestos in their construction and most still carry this material in their infrastructure. Today’s article fails summarily to note the approved Code of Practice to the Control of Asbestos Regulations (CAR) 2012 which states clearly: work which disturbs, or is liable to disturb, ACM’s should only be carried out when it is unavoidable or report independent expert opinion.
The Glasgow School of Art, similar to other institutions and companies, takes expert, independent advice on all aspects of the management of asbestos to ensure the safety of its students, staff, visitors and buildings. In respect of the Stow Building this involved how to manage the roof extension given both the progress and changes in health and safety and fire measures since 1973 and the 2012 CAR regulations. The decisions taken and works carried out at Stow are in accordance with this professional advice and current legislation.
This information was provided to the Sunday Post and is contained within the unredacted Board minutes they have obtained. For some reason they have yet again made a conscious decision to not report this.
