Martin Newth appointed Head of School of Fine Art at The Glasgow School of Art

Artist and
academic leader Martin Newth has been announced as the new Head of School of
Fine Art at The Glasgow School of Art today, Friday 24 November 2023.

 

Currently Assistant Dean in the School of Arts
& Humanities at the Royal College of Art in London, previously Newth was
the Programme Director of Fine Art at Chelsea College of Arts, University of
the Arts London. An internationally exhibited artist, his solo exhibitions and
group shows include London, Berlin, Taipei, Bytom, Milan, The Hague and
Beijing.

new Head of Fine Art”,
says Professor Penny Macbeth, Director of The Glasgow School Of Art.

 

 Martin’s appointment reflects the GSA’s
reputation as a leader in creative education. He is an outstanding candidate who brings extensive experience as an
academic leader, practicing artist and researcher that will enable us to
continue to take the School of Fine Art forward, addressing current challenges
whilst bringing transformative, collaborative approaches to learning and
teaching.”

 

 As an acclaimed artist who curates and shows work
internationally, Martin Newth brings invaluable insight and expertise into
practice and research that will be inspirational to our students as they create
and develop their own work.”

 

Newth’s research interests focus on the
intersection of pedagogy and art practice. Within his own practice Newth delves into the correlation between the
landscape and the methods used to represent it. His experimental photographic and video work uses a range of techniques
and processes to draw attention to the way images are created, including long
exposures, equipment
manipulation and building custom cameras.
