The Glasgow School Of Art Fashion and Textiles graduate Xiaorui Shi has won the Print/Embroidery category in this year’s Global Design Graduate Show 2023 in collaboration with Arts Threads and Gucci.
The highly prestigious award is a remarkable achievement as this year almost 6000 art and design undergraduates, graduates and postgraduates from 100 countries entered their works. Examples of creative works across all the design disciplines were judge by 175 industry experts, with representatives of global brands Gucci and Hugo Boss judging the Fashion and Textiles categories.
“Really honoured to win the award. That’s amazing feel! I enjoyed this experience and grateful to GSA teachers Alan Gallacher, Daniel Fradgley and Philip Robert Patterson for their guidance, Junyi Di for her advice and help on my work.” says Xiaorui Shi.
A China-based fashion-surface designer, Shi originally graduated from the Mdes Fashion and Textiles course in 2022. Shi’s work is focused on combining large monochrome print patterns, inspired by flowers and leaves in nature, to explore structure and silhouette in menswear design.
“My muse for this series arose from a cluster of plants that I came across on a rainy day in Glasgow Botanic Gardens” says Xiaorui Shi.
“Quantities of same-coloured plants struck me as a bit inspiring, telling me that even one single colour only can also demonstrate flowers’ capriciousness, which was later utilised by me to polish the unicity of colours on menswear with a traditional outline.”
The Global Design Graduate Show awards are a fantastic launchpad for creative careers, with hundreds of graduates over the past 4 years securing employment or launching their own brands with the support of this initiative.
“We are absolutely thrilled for Xiaorui as this win will allow his work to extend to a global audience. International successes of this calibre are great for morale and the profile of the Masters programme. Xiaroui’s elegant menswear shuns the short-lived thrill of fast fashion in favour of beautifully crafted and refined wardrobe pieces.”
