Since 2015 4th-year Product Design Engineering students have been set the task of creating a collection of limited edition products for sale as Christmas gifts. 2020 has been a very different year, but the students have risen to the challenges thrown up by Covid-19 to create innovative products by harnessing the potential of technologies such as 3D design and printing. In creating the collection they have been supported by one of leading manufacturers of 3D printers, HP, and specialist 3D software company, Autodesk.

“Innovation is central to the approach our students take to creating designs that address key challenges whether in health, housing, education and society,” says 4th year Programme Leader, Hugh Pizey.  “In the annual Christmas Collection we ask them design products that would be of interest to the retail market and which can be made at an affordable price.”

“This year the task has been made even more challenging by the restrictions put in place to counteract the Covid-19 pandemic. We have been delighted by the energy and enthusiasm, not to mention creativity, that the students have brought to the project. Their designs are all ideal gifts for the festive season.”

“Studio access has necessarily been limited this year due to Government Covid restrictions,” he adds. “However, with the generous support of Hewlett-Packard and Autodesk the students have been able to design and manufacture this year’s Christmas Collection once again offering a unique set of products.”

“We have been very excited to get involved in the PDE project with GSA this year in particular as I qualified in Engineering,” says Maryam Qureshi, Applications Engineer for HP, helped set the brief for the project, developing student interest in Additive Manufacturing as a production tool. “I have really enjoyed working with the students and showcasing to them what is possible with HP’s 3D technology,”

Carmen Tran: Crumple

Limited edition of 10

Price £20 for one pair; £36 for a set of two

Crumple is a functional and stylish, lovingly handcrafted pair of chopsticks with an integrated rest and holder that comes in 4 striking colours. The idea was born from childhood memories of scrunching up disposable chopstick wrappers to create my own chopstick rest during family meals. The shape was modelled after this crumpled up wrapper; turning what was once a piece of rubbish into an ornamental table item to cherish forever. The rests were created using Multi Jet Fusion 3D Printing and the sticks were hand carved from a piece of walnut. The chopsticks were then finished with pure tung oil, which is a naturally food safe oil that brings out the beautiful warm tones and grain of the hardwood, leaving a satin sheen. “Crumple” is a product of two worlds, blending the latest rapid manufacturing technology with the most ancient handmaking techniques to create something that is truly unique

Will be sent First Class within two working days. Last order date 20 December 2020

About the HP Additive Manufacturing Curriculum Programme

Taking place between June 2020 until October 2020, the eight-module course is intended to teach undergraduate or Bachelor’s degree students about additive manufacturing and HP Multi Jet Fusion technology. The individual modules are connected via a common thread so educators can make use of the content as needed, whether it’s a stand-alone session or as a complete course. Making use of business case studies and industry scenarios, students are given a wide exposure to the practical uses of 3DP in manufacturing. Premium curriculum, which includes access to the exam and HP certification is available as part of a bundle with a printer solution purchase.
