Jonathan Mathew Boyd with one of the 2014 Commonwealth Games medal which he designed.

New work by Jonathan Matthew
Boyd, designer of the acclaimed 2014 Commonwealth Games medals, is on show in
the Royal Bank of Scotland in Princes Street as part of the 2015 Edinburgh ArtFestival. Boyd’s work is featured in Reciprociti a pop up exhibition by Patrick Stevenson-Keating, first shown at the
Design Museum in London, which explores value, worth and forms of currency.
In
response to these themes Ruth Gilmour of Saltmarket Design, a Glasgow School of
Art Silversmithing and Jewellery student, has curated a series of exhibits and
events to further consider our own value and worth within the larger systems
around us.
re:value

In
the first of two displays, re:value,
work by Boyd, a multi-award winning designer-maker who also lectures at The
Glasgow School of Art, is shown alongside pieces by Adam Henderson, who graduated from the GSA Silversmithing and Jewellery programme in 2014. Among Boyd’s
pieces are his
WEAR A JONNY (gold
brooches, 2015)
.

Jonathan Mathew Boyd’s Wear a Jonny (Gold brooches, 2015)

“JONNIES
are the strangest commodity,”
says Boyd. “They
are the ultimate one-use product; their use can save lives and prevent disease.
They are a cheap and effective product which despite their visual aesthetic
should be celebrated.

GOLD
is a commodity, which we hold in the highest value. Question your values and
wear a gold JONNY, with pride.”
re:value
will be on show until 17 August 2015.

Make Exchange

The
environment will then be refreshed with the creation of Make Exchange, a conceptual auction house.
Make Exchange will feature furniture made from re-appropriated materials and
graphics by recent GSA graduate, Kat Loudon. On 18 August, designers
Neil McGuire, a lecturer in graphic design at the GSA, and Nathan Clydesdale, a
recent GSA product design graduate, will lead a workshop in which a devised
curreny will be developed for use in the Mark Exchange auction house. Auction attendees will have the chance to
buy works for money or through a system of trade. The Mark Exchange display
will be open to the public from 18 – 31 August 2015.
