A collection of jewellery inspired by Lithuania’s rich cultural history has scooped the prestigious Goldsmiths Company for Jewellery at New Designers 2021. Brigita Bivainyte’s award-winning Metamorphosis of Grain collectionresponded to a brief to design a piece or suite of jewellery to wear at a formal evening event after all restrictions have been lifted, producing a unique and distinctive piece or suite of jewellery.

Wheat, rye, seeds, sun symbols, certain stones (amber), folk songs, woven textiles and costumes, all contribute to Lithuania’s cultural history and identity. Brigita’s designs made in brass and sterling silver gold-plated in 24k evoke these important elements of the nation’s cultural identity many of which have been considered obsolete in recent times.

“Metamorphosis of grain symbolises the link between different generations in Lithuania and how unique traditions are passed on through years,” explains Brigita. “The Connection between me and my ancestors is depicted by links shaped as rye flowers.”

We are delighted that Brigita’s work has been recognised with this prestigious award,” says Anna Gordon, Head of Silversmnithing and Jewellery at The Glasgow School of Art. “The centrepiece of her collection is a stunning necklace which can be transformed and adapted to different occasions and is an ideal statement piece for a post Covid formal event.”

Brigita Bivainyte is the latest GSA graduate to win one of the Goldsmiths Company awards at New Designers following Yitong Zhang (Silversmithing Award, 2020), Eleanor Whitworth (Jewellery Award 2019) Harriet Jenkins (Silversmithing Award 2019) Rachel Hardie ( Silversmithing Award 2018); Andrew Fleming (Silversmithing Award2017Miki Asai (Jewellery Award 2017)
