David Law, the driving force behind California-based Speck Products and Crucible Brands, who co-founded Scotland-based Drown last year, has been awarded an Honorary Professorship at his alma mater, The Glasgow School of Art, it was announced today, 7 October 2019
A Product Design Engineering graduate of the GSA and the University of Glasgow, Law went on to co-found Speck Design (1996), one of Silicon Valley’s premier design engineering companies, and co-found Speck Products (2002), the Valley’s most successful case company for Apple hardware. Speck’s client list reads like a Who’s Who of engineering and technology, from Apple to Cisco, Mercedes Benz to Google, Audi to Zspace. Law was instrumental in taking Speck from a start up to a $70 million exit to private equity and then Samsonite.
Recruited at the Board Level by the Target Corporation as Entrepreneur in Residence in 2015, David Law went on in 2017 to launch Crucible Brands, a product and technology innovation group within Target, to explore retail futures. Crucible Brands has become an external entity to Target, sharing jointly created patents, IP and an exciting product pipeline.
In 2018 Law helped found and is currently CEO of Scotland-based Drown, which is creating game changing audio hardware.
‘I’m delighted that David has been awarded an Hon. Prof from the School of Art,”says Craig Whittet, Head of Product Design Engineering at the GSA. “Not only is this recognition for David, one of the first PDE graduates, but it also highlights the influence of PDE and the part that the programme has played in developing products, technology and new channels to market.’
“The PDE joint programme at Glasgow University and The Glasgow School of Art was years ahead of its time and I feel blessed to have been part of its early years,”says David Law. “It continues to create incredible thinkers, makers and doers who challenge preconceived notions and who are helping build a future that we all can be excited about. Over the years, I have worked with many graduates from the program and continue to be impressed and delighted with the way that they approach problem solving.”
