Fiona Stewart, the Director of Estates and Facilities at the National Museums of Scotland, is to join The Glasgow School of Art as Strategic Director of Estates it was announced today, Wednesday 13 November 2019.
A Chartered Surveyor with 25 years experience in Estate Management, Fiona Stewart has delivered major projects for both Edinburgh Napier University and the University of Edinburgh as well as for National Museums Scotland which she joined in 2012.
In her new role Fiona will lead The Glasgow School of Art’s Estate Development strategy which will support its vision to be a global leader in studio-based learning and research. The strategy will ensure delivery of high quality environments for students and staff, and increase access by developing facilities for common use.
As Strategic Director of Estates Fiona will lead on all capital projects, including refurbishment of older buildings and disposal of buildings that are no longer fit for purpose, and deliver on the GSA’s commitment to explore all options for the Mackintosh Building rebuild.

Fiona Stewart
Fiona Stewart grew up in Edinburgh and has an honours degree in Quantity Surveying from Edinburgh Napier University. She qualified as a Chartered Surveyor in 1996, and as a Chartered Member of the Institute of Building in 1997.
From 1994 – 1997 Fiona Stewart worked as a Quantity Surveyor with various construction companies and in 1997 she joined the NHS as an Estates Project Manager. From 1998 – 2007 Fiona was Estate Development Manager, University of Edinburgh and in 2007 moved to Edinburgh Napier University as Assistant Director of Property and Facilities. Since 2012 Fiona Stewart has beenDirector of Estates and Facilities at the National Museums Scotland.
