- Graduate Showcase 2020 also includes commitment to supporting physical exhibitions and presentations when distancing restrictions are lifted
The Glasgow School of Art has unveiled details of Graduate Showcase 2020, today, 18 May 2020, announcing a bespoke digital platform which will launch on Friday 29 May 2020. It has also confirmed a commitment to support physical exhibitions and presentations of work when distancing restrictions are lifted.
The digital platform will be content-rich enabling graduating architecture, art and design students from across the GSA’s five schools to show a wide range of work including sketch-books, writings, video, audio and images. The students will also be able to link from the platform to their own websites and social media accounts making it possible to explore the students’ practice in greater detail and depth. Additionally, the digital platform will host a series of events, happenings, and videos from across the GSA’s creative community linking the students with over 20,000 alumni. Uniquely, graduates will be able to develop their showcases on the digital platform for a further 12 months after launch, allowing new work to be added as it is made.
Recognising the importance of physical presentations of work, the GSA is also committed to supporting a programme of exhibitions and events when distancing restrictions are eventually lifted.
“The GSA’s annual Degree Show holds a special place in the creative journey of our students and in the cultural life of Glasgow,” says Professor Irene McAra-McWilliam, Director of The Glasgow School of Art.
“It is of course very disappointing that this year’s Degree Show cannot take its usual form, so these unprecedented times require creative and imaginative responses,” she adds. “We are delighted to be working with Rectangle to create a unique professional platform for our hugely talented, emerging artists, architects and designers to present their work to a global public as well as to curators, potential employers and buyers over the next 12 months.”
“The purpose of this platform is not to replicate a Degree Show experience, but to let the graduating students showcase their practice,” says Lizzie Malcolm of Rectangle. “We’ve designed it in a way that will keep the focus on the students, their work, and the online events and performances that will be organised over the coming months.”
“We recognise the importance of physical exhibitions and presentations of work and are therefore committed to sponsoring shows and events in which this cohort of graduates present their work as professional practitioners once restrictions are lifted,” says Professor McAra-McWilliam. “This sponsorship will be available for exhibitions and presentations they organise not just in Glasgow, but nationally and indeed internationally, reflecting the global reach of the GSA and its Creative Network of students and alumni.
“The ability of architects, artists and designers to share their work with a public and professional audience is central to what they do. Graduate Showcase 2020 provides two distinctive, but connected platforms through which our graduating students can do this.”
