Meanwhile, recent 2021 graduate and current Artist-in-Residence at the GSA, Scott Smith won the Champagne Gosset Award for an amazing third time. After a securing the prize for his response to the brief for a reimagined champagne glass in 2020 and the “Gosset Celebris” champagne stopper in 2021, Scott scooped the 2023 Award with his design for a caviar spoon, which also won him a gold award in the 2D Smallworks Design category.
PhD Student, Caiyang Yin, picked up three silver and three bronze awards as well as securing the Chasers Special Council Bursary Award, whilst GSA Artist-in-Residence Kristina Merchant won two silvers and a bronze.
Other successes include a Gold Award and the “Gem-A Award” for Artist-in-Residence, Samantha Sloane; a bronze and a sliver award for Caitlin Murphy for work that was created for her 2022 Degree Show; and a bronze and a silver to Artist-in-Residence Amy Findlay. The evening culminated in the presentation of the most prestigious awards including the highest accolade, the Cartier Award. This year the Cartier Award was presented to GSA almuna Karen Wallace for her carved steel rifle cover, with judges commenting that “the level of skill was simply stratospheric and of a quality rarely seen.” Karen had received a Gold Medal in the Engravers category for the design earlier in the evening.
“We are immensely proud of our students, staff and Artists-in-Residence whose creativity and innovative designs so impressed the judges at this year’s awards,” says Professor Stephen Bottomley, Head of the School of Design at the GSA.
“We were delighted to have this success recognised in the presentation of the College Trophy Award, especially when up against strong competition from previous 2022 winners Birmingham City University and the Royal College of Art who came in third place .”
“We also send our warmest congratulations to our alumna, Karen Wallace on winning the highest accolade of the evening – the prestigious Cartier Award.”
Work by many of the winning designers will be on show at the Goldsmiths Centre, London from 2 May to 15 June 2023.
