Fourth year Product Design Engineering students at The Glasgow School of Art have unveiled a collection of limited-edition gifts for Christmas 2019. This is the fifth year that young designers from the GSA have been challenged to apply their creativity to develop products conceived especially for retail sale.
Nineteen students are offering a range of designs including a colourful magnetic key holder, a stylish take on the Noughts and Crosses game, recycled glass candle holdersand pewter mounted whisky glasses, almost all of which are priced at under £50.
Inspiration for the designs ranged from Scotland’s Munros and lakes to Celtic knots and Glasgow designer Charles Anderson with materials including recycled glass bottles, repurposed aluminium pipe, Jesmonite, concrete, brass, pewter and resin.
“The students benefit significantly from this ongoing project,” saysHugh Pizey, tutor on the PDE programme. “We challenge them to experiment with materials, try out new processes and finesse their skills, and in particular ask them to focus on creating designs that will be both affordable and attractive to a customer looking for something different at Christmas.”
This year the students have been working closely with designer Jen Stewart who has been giving them feedback on their designs throughout the process, in particular about their saleability.
“It is important for the students to receive advice and feedback as they shape their products so they can build it into their designs,” says Jen. “Not only do they need to make sure that they are creating designs that to appeal to customers, but they need to be aware of what price people will be willing to pay.”
The designs will be on sale in Welcome Home at the CCA, Sauchiehall Street, from Saturday 7 – Friday 13 December while stocks last. Welcome Home is open Monday-Saturday, 11am – 6pm, Sun 12 noon- 6pm,
