Christina
Wong, a third year weave specialist at The Glasgow School of Art, has made the
semi-finals of Redress, a major international Fashion competition, it was
revealed today, 24 April 2018.
By putting sustainable design talent in the global spotlight, the
competition creates a unique platform for passionate and talented fashion
game-changers to transform the global fashion industry and rewards the best
with career-changing prizes to maximise long-term impact
.
Redress
Hong
Kong based Redress aims to
reduce textile waste in the
fashion industry and each year runs a competition for emerging fashion talent
to help promote sustainable design. This year marks the 10th
anniversary of the competition, which challenges young designers from across
the globe
to transform textile waste into stunning, scalable and
commercially viable collections.
2018 saw a record number of applications with the young designers scored
on creativity, originality, sustainability and market viability.
Christina, who is the first weaver to participate in Redress, beat off competition from hundreds of young designers to
make the semi-final short list of 30 who will now go forward to face an
international judging panel. Ten finalists will realise waste reducing
collections in time for Hong Kong Fashion Week in September.

“Being a weaver, I felt there was a disconnection
between textile and fashion disciplines,”
says Christina, “By combining the design
of woven textiles and pattern-making, I discovered that 100% zero-waste
production is possible through weaving – from yarn to garment. I hope to
illustrate the importance of different roles in the industry and show that
collaboration is crucial to find solutions.”

Christina Wong showcased her commitment to sustainability
in GSA Fashion Show last month with designs in which more than 50% of the woven
pieces were upcycled waste.
She was inspired by the timeless aesthetic of Chanel and Linton tweeds
for her Redress Design Award submission. Her zero-waste collection is created
from up-cycled discontinued yarns sourced from a local Scottish mill and yarn
scraps found at the GSA, and consists of simple silhouettes which focus on
colour composition and texture.
“We are delighted to learn that Christina has reached the
semi-finals of this prestigious competition,”
says Jimmy Stephen-Cran, Head of Fashion and Textiles at the GSA. “In a world of throw away fashion, Christina has demonstrated that with
thought and imagination it is possible to be stylish as well as responsible.”

As well as the main
competition prize, the public are invited to participate in a vote for “the
People’s Choice” Award.
“We are
incredibly proud of Christina,”
adds Jimmy Stephen-Cran, “and urge people to vote for her in the People’s Choice Award.”
Voting for the People’s
Choice Award is now open and closes on 6 May. To vote for Christina Wong visit
