Glasgow FE College helps the
GSA to deliver Schools workshop programme which was under threat due the Mackintosh
Building fire.

A group of S4 Secondary school pupils who were looking
forward to a week of GSA Taster events were able to go ahead with their
programme thanks to support from City of Glasgow College it was revealed today,
27 July 2018.
The Taster programme, which is run by the Glasgow
School of Art Widening Participation (WP) team each summer, was due to have taken
place on the GSA campus, but because of the fire in the Mackintosh
Building some GSA buildings are currently not accessible and it looked like the
activities might have to be cancelled.
Fortunately for the young people, who come from WP
target schools across the west of Scotland, City of Glasgow College offered the
GSA spaces in their Cathedral Street campus so that the programme could go
ahead as planned.

The Taster week for S4 pupils gives the young people
an introduction to the various creative disciplines that are offered in
undergraduate programmes at the GSA. Throughout the week the young people were
tutored by members of the WP team, all of whom are GSA graduates. They have
also had a workshop led by acclaimed designer, Laura Spring, and visited
Kelvingrove Museum and Art Gallery to make preparatory drawings before going in
to create a range headdresses. The week culminated in Tower Wars, a fun event
which saw groups of young people competing to build the highest standing tower
as part of an introduction to architecture.

“We are hugely grateful to
City of Glasgow College for their support in helping us make sure our S4 Taster
Week could go ahead,”

says Suzanne Kay, Widening Participation Manager at The Glasgow School of Art
“Taster week is a very important part of our Widening
Participation work. It gives a hands on opportunity for young people, many of
whom have not considered following a course of creative study at university, to
learn more about what is on offer at the GSA.”
“Many of the young people
are inspired by taster week to go on and take part in our portfolio preparation
courses. This year 37 young people who took part in WP activities were offered
places to study architecture, design or Fine Art at GSA, with many others
receiving offers to study at their chosen universities across the UK.”

Notes for Editors

In recent weeks The GSA WP team has:
  • led a residential weekend at Saddell House, Argyll,
for young people interested in studying architecture. The event was part of a
Landmark Futures, a scheme introduced by the Land Mark Trust which offered HE
institutions the opportunity to use some of their properties. The GSA was one
of only 20 institutions to be offered the chance and the pnly one to use it for
work with young people from SMID20 areas.

  • run workshops for school pupils at Glasgow Kelvin and
Ayrshire Colleges (in partnership with the colleges and RCS),

  • held two days of workshops at Islay High School and
produced a special supplement for the Ileach newspaper
