Juliet Kinchin, the Design Curator at New York’s Museum of Modern
Art (MoMA) and the leading artists and educators AHM (Sam Ainsley, David Harding and Sandy Moffat) will be awarded
Honorary Doctorates at The Glasgow School of Art’s 2018 Graduation ceremonies
it was announced today, 26 May 2018.
Juliet Kinchin, a former
GSA member of staff, joined New York’s prestigious Museum of Modern Art in
2008. In her ten years there she has curated a number of high profile
exhibitions and contributed to leading international publications. Juliet
Kinchin’s expertise in the area European design at the time of Mackintosh, in
particular, has made a significant contribution to our understanding of the
period.
“Juliet Kinchin is Design curator at one of the world’s leading
institutions for which she has organised a number of acclaimed exhibitions,”
says
Professor Tom Inns, director of The Glasgow School of Art.
“Juliet’s contribution to the understanding of Glasgow’s place in
European design at the time of Mackintosh in particular is world class. Through
her published books and articles as well as the many exhibitions that she has
helped to organise we have gained a much deeper insight into Glasgow Style,
Mackintosh and also into Central European Modernism.”
“I am deeply honored
and touched by this award that affirms the connection I feel with this
inspirational place and its international community of former students and
colleagues,”
says
Juliet Kinchin “The Glasgow School of
Art, and the University of Glasgow, have profoundly shaped my creative and
intellectual life, and my professional career.”
David Harding, Sandy Moffat and Sam Ainsley (AHM)
Also being recognised
at this year’s graduation are three leading artists who have made a seminal
contribution to art practice and education over the last 40 years – Sam
Ainsley, David Harding and Sandy Moffat (collectively known as AHM). The three
artists came together as lecturers at The Glasgow School of Art and at the time
of their retirements were Heads of the MFA , Environmental Art and Painting and
Printmaking departments.
“Sam Ainsley, David Harding and Sandy Moffat have individually and
collectively nurtured generations of artists who have gone on to make Glasgow’s
reputation as a leading centre of creative practice,”
says Tom Inns. “The scale of their contribution to art
education was demonstrated tangibly in the 2014 showcase of Contemporary Art in
Scotland which featured 100 artists, the vast majority of whom had studied
under Sam, David and Sandy.”
AHM are also acclaimed
artists in their own right. Sam Ainsley’s work is held in collections including
the National Galleries of Scotland and she has exhibited extensively internationally.
David Harding’s ground-breaking work as town artist in Glenrothes in the 1970s
is one the first examples of socially engaged practice, which is now a
fundamental part of contemporary art practice. Sandy Moffat’s work can be seen
in many permanent collections, and he has exhibited both within the UK and
overseas.
“Together Sam Ainsley, David
Harding and Sandy Moffat created a unique educational environment where a
strong fine art tradition of a painting, sculpture and photography sat at ease
alongside a fine art practice driven by ideas, context and the external world,”
adds Professor Inns. “Their ability to make such a significant contribution was in no
small part due to their own standing as acclaimed artists in their own right.”
The
Honorary Doctorates, which will be conferred by The University of Glasgow, will
be awarded at the GSA Graduation ceremonies on Friday 15 June 2018 at the Bute
Hall, University of Glasgow.
