Five new Lay Governors to join the GSA Board
Leading professionals and academics will bring wealth of expertise and experience to the institution in the next stage of its development.
Five new Lay Governors will join the Board of the Glasgow School of Art in November 2019 it was announced today, 29 October 2019. The new Lay Governors were appointed following a widely advertised call earlier in the year which attracted a significant level of interest. They will serve for an initial term of three years.
“Following our call for new Lay Governors earlier in the year we had more than 30 responses from across the UK and Europe,” says Professor Nora Kearney, Chair of the Board of Governors of The Glasgow School of Art. “The calibre of the applicants was excellent, reflecting the profile and reputation of the GSA as one of the world’s top ten creative education institutions. It also demonstrates the level of commitment there is to building the position of GSA.”
“I am delighted to announce that Kristen Bennie, Ann Faulds, Professor John French, Dr Marty Herbert and Tsz Wu will be joining the Board of Governors on 1 November 2019 supporting the GSA in the next stages of its development. They are all highly-experienced individuals who will play a key role in shaping the future of the GSA including supporting the appointment of a permanent Director and, in due course, the rebuild of the Mackintosh Building.”
Kristen Bennie is Head of Open Experience (OX) at The Royal Bank of Scotland. She has extensive experience in the areas of design, innovation, business development, strategic planning and financial services.
Ann Faulds has over 30 years’ experience as a solicitor specialising in town planning and transport law. She has extensive legal experience advising public and private sector clients on development proposals, and setting and implementing development strategies.
Professor John French is a fellow of Wolfson College Cambridge and Executive Director at the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership. A specialist in entrepreneurship and enterprise, and sustainability leadership, Professor French has a strong track record in major capital projects, client-side leadership, governance and oversight.
Dr Marty Herbert is Director for KPMG in the UK and Global Lead for experience design. He has significant experience in innovation, experience design, business change, operational leadership and governance.
Tsz Wu, a GSA graduate, is the Co-Founder and Technical Director of the branding agency Pink Squid. His expertise includes web architecture and digital marketing

The Board of Governors of The Glasgow School of Art consists of a total membership of not less than 11 and not more than 25 members. It comprises lay members, staff representatives (appointed by the Academic Council and elected by the School) and ex officio officers including the Director of the GSA and the President of the GSASA (Student Union). Additionally, Trade Union representatives attend meetings of the Board.

Lay Governors are normally appointed for a period of three years. They may then be further appointed further 3-year terms (with a maximum of three 3-year terms). Ex-officios hold office as a Governor for the duration of their tenure in the role.

Responsible for designing and creating OX, spaces that work with others, at the bounds of what is possible to develop innovative products, services and businesses. Ms Bennie brings to this role her extensive experience in the areas of design, innovation, business development, strategic planning and financial services.
Ann Faulds, who has over 30 years’ experience as a solicitor specialising in town planning and transport law. Ms Faulds has extensive legal experience advising public and private sector clients on development proposals, managing legal and political risks, and setting and implementing development strategies. Ms Faulds also has extensive Board experience, having served on a range of public sector bodies in the education, health, transport, infrastructure and technology sectors.
Professor John French, Executive Director at the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership. Active in entrepreneurship and enterprise, and sustainability leadership, Professor French possesses a strong track record in major capital projects, client-side leadership, and effective governance and oversight. In addition, Professor French is a Fellow of Wolfson College, Cambridge, and a Professorial Fellow at the University of East Anglia.
Dr Marty Herbert, Director for KPMG in the UK, and Global Lead for experience design. Dr Herbert’s professional expertise spans strategy and innovation, experience design, business change, operational leadership and governance, and programme management.
Tsz Wu is the Co-Founder and Technical Director of the branding agency Pink Squid. An alumnus of GSA, Tsz is a highly experienced web architect and digital marketing strategist.
