Luxury
items designed and made in Scotland prove hit with shoppers
Designs by GSA staff, students and alumni proved increasingly popular
with Christmas shoppers in 2017.
The GSA Shop saw a 28% uplift in online sales
during the Christmas 2017 period it was revealed today, Tuesday 16 January 2018.
The success of the online operation, which now represents 25% of sales in the
shop, contributed to an overall uplift of 9.5% in sales. Christmas 2017 also
saw an increasing number of international orders which now represent 15% of
online sales.
The GSA Shop, which retails designs by GSA
staff, students and alumni, is a champion of local designer-makers and of luxury
products made in Scotland. It brings Scottish talent to a local, national and
increasingly international audience.
“We are delighted that
customers who value high quality production and innovative design, and who are
looking for more meaningful gifts are seeking us out,”
says Annie Lavety, Retail Buyer and Operations
Manager. “We are particularly delighted that
people who have visited the GSA from all over the world are continuing to
support our talented staff, students and alumni by shopping with us online.”
Among the items flying off the shelves in 2017 was
high-end knitwear by GSA graduate Alan Dibble of Green Thomas with the Chevron
Blanket (£125) and Houndstooth scarves (£95) topping the list of best-selling
gifts. Also selling well was the Finnieston Crane model kit by Christian
Pomeroy which was initially introduced in 2015 in the first year of an ongoing
collaborative project between the GSA Shop and the School’s department of
Product Design Engineering.
The Glasgow
School of Art Shop acts as the client on this cross-school collaboration
project, taking part in student crits throughout the process to offer advice
and feedback, shaping the students’ products to appeal to customers and be
ready for retail.
To date 35
students on the PDE programme have created limited edition designs for the
shop’s Christmas collection.
Christmas Cards featuring designs held in the GSA’s
Archives and Collections continued to be popular. 2017 saw the introduction of
a set of four designs by Sylvia Chalmers and the return of the four Santa
designs by Kit Grant.
