The Glasgow School of
Art was sad to learn of the death of William Lever, Emeritus
Professor of Urban Studies in The Mackintosh
School of Architecture at the GSA and Emeritus
Professor in the dept of Urban Studies at the University of Glasgow.

Professor Lever trained as a geographer with a
doctorate in demography and his research interests included urban policy in
Britain and Europe, regional policy in the EU, migration, the knowledge
economy, and competitiveness. His research on rural migration, the impact of
urban regeneration policy on socio-demographies, and the determinants of urban
economic growth was particularly influential, and he was the author of a number
of books on urban change.
Johnny Rodger,
Professor of Urban Literature at the GSA, remembers William Lever:
My colleagues and I are very sad to
hear of the passing away of Professor William Lever. Bill was a forerunner of mine at The Glasgow School of Art, and a bit
of a mentor too, in the Built Environment dept,  as it was called then
before it became known as the  ‘History
and Theory’ department. He originally taught at both the Mackintosh School of
Architecture in The Glasgow School of Art and at Urban Studies at Glasgow
University, and he set up a vital exchange and sharing of teaching and research
between the two faculties which lasts up until this day.

He was an avuncular presence in the
department: approachable and helpful, accommodating and nurturing for younger
staff, while very forthright in his political opinions. Indeed his vast
knowledge about how cities work – their economies, cultures and politics –  meant that he had a serious and wide ranging
involvement in both civic and national life, and was invited to serve on
political and economic committees and policy bodies of various hues.

He was a great teacher fondly
remembered by generations of students, had a brilliant mind, wrote wonderfully
about such topics as poverty and housing in Less Developed countries, and was
internationally a massively respected academic and intellectual. The journal
‘Urban Studies’ which Professor Lever edited from Glasgow University is ranked
as one of the top publications for social science and urban scholarship and
research in the world. He played a very important role in the engaged and
socially active tradition of the Mackintosh School of Architecture which is
still ongoing to this day, and The Glasgow School of Art owes him a great debt in
terms of our school formation and ethos.
