HRH Prince Richard,
Duke of Gloucester, KG GCVO has donated books from his personal library to The
Glasgow School of Art it was announced today 26 December 2015. The Duke, who is a
first cousin of HM Queen Elizabeth II, studied architecture at Cambridge
University in the 1960s and after qualifying practiced as an architect for a
number of years. He has a substantial library and in the aftermath of the fire
in the Mackintosh Building offered the GSA the opportunity to take some of his
architecture and design books as the School rebuilt its collections.

Alison Stevenson, Head
of Learning at the GSA and GSA Academic Liaison Librarian, David Buri, together with Johnny
Rodger, Professor of Urban Literature in the Mackintosh School of Architecture,
went to Kensington Palace earlier in the year to meet with The Duke and see the
range of books in his collection. Now over 80 volumes have been sent to the GSA
and the students will be able to benefit from them in the New Year.

The Duke of Gloucester has a long relationship with The Glasgow School of Art. He officially opened the Bourdon Building, which houses the GSA’s main library and the Mackintosh School of Architecture, in 1979.
Among the books that he has donated to the GSA are volumes on leading architects of the 20th
century including Arne Jacobsen, Le Corbusier, Marcel Breuer, Colin St John
Wilson and Leandro Locsin who was a direct contemporary of the celebrated
Scottish architects Andy MacMillan, (former Professor of Architecture and Head
of The Mackintosh School of Architecture at the GSA) and Isi Metzstein.

Notes for Editors
- In the aftermath of
the fire the GSA published a list of priority books for replacement many of which
have been donated by institutions and individuals from across the world.
- The GSA is currently in
the process of tendering for a principal contractor to undertake the
restoration of the Mackintosh Building including the library. The School is
aiming for access to the building from the 2018/19 academic year.
