2018 Newbery Medal winner, Textile Design graduate Erin McQuarrie, who along with her fellow graduates from Textile Design and Silversmithing & Jewellery will be able to showcase work at New Designers in London thanks to Scottish Fire and Rescue Service

Textile Design and
Silversmithing & Jewellery graduates from The Glasgow School of Art will be
able to take part in the prestigious New Designers Showcase in London next week
it was revealed today, 20 June 2018.
Work by over 40
graduates from the two programmes was in the Reid Building packed up ready to
ship to London on Friday 15 June when fire broke out in the Mackintosh
Building.
With the Reid Building still
within the incident site it was doubtful that the graduates would be able to
participate in this important showcase, which is the launch
pad for the next generation of design talent.
Fortunately for the
graduates the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service offered to escort GSA staff into
the Reid Building the retrieve all the work so that it could be despatched to
London on schedule.
“The graduate showcases in London such as New Designers and Free Range
are important opportunities for young designers to showcase their Degree Show
work to a broader audience,”
says Barbara Ridley, Head of the School of
Design at The Glasgow School of Art. “It
would have been particularly disappointing for our recent Textile Design and
Silversmithing & Jewellery graduates if they had missed out on this important
career opportunity due to Friday’s fire.”
“We are hugely thankful to the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service for
allowing us into the Reid Building to retrieve all the work so that it can be
dispatched to London on time.”
“Today our crews have been assisting students to retrieve their work,”
says SFRS Deputy
Chief Officer, Iain Bushell
. “It’s been really heart warming to see the
continuing effort of all our crews even several days into the incident, and the
way that we are able to assist them to get this community back to normal as
soon as we can.”
Textile Design and

Business Design Centre,
52 Upper Street
