Professor Irene McAra-McWilliam has announced today, 26 November 2019, that she will not be applying for the position of permanent Director of The Glasgow School of Art which is currently being advertised. Professor McAra-McWilliam was appointed Director ad interim in November 2018 and will stay in post until the new Director is appointed, returning to her role as Deputy Director (Innovation) at that time.
She will be taking forward the GSA’s work in the Highlands including the growth of the Altyre Campus as well as our strategic developments in Dumfries and Galloway, working extensively with the enterprise agencies, the Scottish Funding Council and regional partners to consolidate the GSA’s role as Scotland’s art school.
In addition, she will lead the development of the newest academic schools, the Innovation School and the School of Simulation and Visualisation. These Schools, together with GSA’s Archives and Collections, will play an important role in the development of the new Centre for Creative Engagement – an innovative activity geared to wide collaboration with partners in Glasgow, Scotland and internationally.
Announcing her decision, Professor McAra-McWilliam said she was “honoured to have led The Glasgow School of Art through one of the most challenging periods in the School’s history and that she looked forward to continuing to contribute to the GSA’s long history of creativity and innovation as one of the world’s finest art schools”.
