The
Glasgow School Of Art Degree Show opens – launching new generation of talent to
boost city’s creative industries and contemporary culture

The Glasgow School of Art (GSA)
Degree Show
2023 opens to the public on Friday 2nd of June where a new
generation of students will showcase their creativity, innovation and energy in
what is Glasgow’s largest public exhibition of work from some of the world’s
leading creative graduates. The physical show will run alongside an
expansive digital showcase, which launches live on the 1st June on www.gsashowcase.net

Over 600 students from the GSAs five Schools will
exhibit work which addresses many of the contemporary challenges they will face
as they start their creative careers – from community and collaboration to
gender, identity and representation, climate emergency to adaptation and
reinvention, landscape and the Anthropocene to health and wellbeing. GSA Degree
Show 2023 presents an impressive breadth of new work which underlines how
innovative thinking and creative, co-designed responses are critical skills
needed across all aspects of our contemporary lives.

The impact of the physical
exhibition, reflecting the global reach of a GSA graduate, is amplified by the
accompanying digital showcase, which allows people from across the world to
engage with the immense creativity coming out of Glasgow.  Graduates will
also be able to add to their digital portfolios on the showcase for up to 12
months, offering the opportunity to present their developing professional
practice post-graduation – supporting them to secure new roles and commissions
across the world.

Digital and physical poster
sites across the city highlight the diversity of work in Degree Show
2023.  Product Design BDes student Mia Xintong
s Beegnal is an
elegant and innovative device to help communicate with bees by mimicking the
insect
s
vomeronasal organ, allowing humans to perceive the pheromones emitted by bees,
Fine Art Photography student Corrie Jennison
s surreal
and eerie photograph REM explores what makes images
dreamlike and
encourages viewers to think of their own personal experience of dreaming and James
Epps’
mixed media work spans collage, printmaking, sculpture and short
story writing.  HIs piece Snags and Such in Progress plays with the
forms of text, exploring language and colour in a way that refuses to be read
from one set position.

Professor Penny Macbeth,
Director of The Glasgow School of Art said:
 “Degree Show is a
celebration of creativity, ambition and hard work, one of the highlights of
both the academic year and the city’s cultural calendar. We are very excited to
be welcoming the City into the Glasgow School of Art to experience the
work  of our incredibly talented students.

 “Our students create the
most inspiring and dynamic portfolios of work and Degree Show allows them to
show what they can offer the world as they move into the next stage of their
creative careers as professional artists, designers and architects.

 “Our physical Degree Show
sits alongside the digital showcase, sharing with a global audience the
individuality and creativity that our students are renowned for worldwide and
celebrating the contribution they make, as part of Glasgow’s creative network,
to the City’s global reputation as a creativity and innovation culture.”

Marc Keenan, Managing Director,
Ocean Scotland said:

 “Ocean
Scotland is delighted to support talent from The Glasgow School of Art as part
of this year
s Degree
Show. The partnership will transform Glasgow into an outdoor gallery where
digital art will be displayed throughout the city. Working with young creatives
brings our
Art of
Outdoor
mission
statement to life and we wish the graduates success in their future careers.”
