Singapore, 22 June 2015 – The Glasgow School of Art Singapore (GSA), a
leading institution for creative education and research in fine art, design and
architecture, will host its second degree showcase from today till 26 June 2015 at
the National Design Centre.

Graduating students from the institute’s Communication Design and
Interior Design programmes will showcase their creative work exploring social
and political themes, with a number of installations inspired by the
transformation of Singapore in celebration of its Jubilee year.

Despite being a relatively new addition to the Singapore design scene, GSA has cemented its reputation as a world-class institution. Its students have won more awards than any other local institutions receiving numerous accolades at the recent SG50 Local Champions Global Leaders challenge, Singapore Crowbar Awards, as well as achieving success at the Singapore Design Awards and participating in the latest edition of ArtStage Singapore.

Professor Tom Inns, Director of
the Glasgow School of Art, said, “
The exhibiting work at this year’s showcase reflects an ongoing phenomenon
we’ve begun to see in the design world; the convergence of fine art and design.
This blurring of the boundaries has emerged in recent years, and it’s
heartening to see how our students have explored the connection, demonstrating
their awareness of industry changes. In fact, all the students in our 2014 pioneer
cohort have found jobs since graduation, a reflection of the real-world applications
of our programme.”

Professor Tan Thiam Soon, President, Singapore Institute of Technology
said, “We are happy that our partnership with Glasgow School of Art continues
to flourish and produce graduates who are driven by their passions and
dedicated to creating work that is refreshing and relevant to Singapore. This
showcase is a culmination of many years of hard work, celebrating the students’
talent and creativity while marking the beginning of their creative careers as
the newest generation of local designers.”
Offering their degrees in partnership with the Singapore Institute of
Technology, the first overseas campus of The Glasgow School of Art was
established in 2012 on the premises of Temasek Polytechnic to support
Singapore’s ambition towards being the hub for creativity and excellence in
Asia.

This year’s graduating cohort will be receiving their degrees in the Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Communication Design and Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Interior Design, on 26 June 2015.

About the Glasgow School of Art

The Glasgow School of Art was founded in 1845 as one of the first
Government Schools of Design, as a centre of creativity promoting good design
for the manufacturing industries of Glasgow.  However, the School’s
lineage can be traced to 1753, when Robert Foulis established a school of art
and design in Glasgow, described as “the single most influential factor in the
development of eighteenth-century Scottish Art”.  Today, The Glasgow
School of Art (GSA) is internationally recognised as one of Europe’s leading
university-level institutions for the visual creative disciplines.

Our studio-based approach to research and teaching brings disciplines
together to explore problems in new ways to find new innovative solutions.
The studio creates the environment for inter-disciplinarity, peer
learning, critical enquiry, experimentation and prototyping, helping to
addressing many of the grand challenges confronting society and contemporary
business.
