The
Glasgow School of Art will show The
Marmite Prize For Painting IV exhibition
from 2 March – 6 April 2013. An
artist run, open submission painting prize and touring exhibition, the Marmite
Prize is named after the old English word for a cooking pot and alludes to the mixing of diverse
practices encouraged. It also relates to the prize itself – a specially made
interpretation of a ‘marmite’, which each year is donated by a different
artist. This year the
renowned artist Richard Wentworth has made the ‘marmite sculpture’ for the
award and the winner will be announced in the summer.

The Marmite
Prize for Painting IV features work by 32 international artists, including GSA MFA
graduate Hyojun Hyun, who were selected from almost 850 entries. Every Marmite
Prize exhibition is also dedicated to an artist, which influences how it is
hung in each venue. This year the exhibition is dedicated to the former London
artist collective BANK and their iconic and notorious 1995 exhibition ‘Zombie
Golf’. In an associated talk John Beagles, who with Graham Ramsay participated in
several BANK projects, will give an overview of the group’s aims and activity
(6 March). Marmite Prize for Painting curators Stephanie Moran and Marcus Cope
will also give a gallery talk discussing the exhibited paintings and their
curatorial approach (2 March). Both events are free.

The Marmite Prize for
Painting is a non-profit independent project established in 2006, run by
painters, for painters. The project questions the validity of art prizes that
evaluate creative activity purely by assigning a monetary value to the
‘winning’ artwork, and as an alternative to a cash prize, the winning painter
takes away the marmite, an artist-made vessel.

The
works featured in The Marmite Prize for Painting IV were shortlisted by a
representative from each of the tour galleries (Central Art Gallery in Tameside,
The Glasgow School of Art, Ruskin Gallery, Cambridge, The Gallery at Plymouth
College and Tannery Arts, London) along with the Marmite Prize curators, Marcus
Cope and Stephanie Moran. The selection process was made entirely anonymously
from jpegs submitted by the artists. The judges, who will select a winner and
two runners up from the shortlist are painters Marta Marce, Dawn Mellor, Tim
Stoner and 2010 Marmite Prize winner Iain Andrews.
