GSA alumnus, Toby Paterson
Glasgow School of Art
alumnus, Toby Paterson, has come together with the acclaimed musicians of The
Scottish Ensemble to create a site-specific, immersive experience bringing
together music, visual art and architecture. Set in a building rarely
accessible to the public the event,

20th-Century Perspectives,
will take place on the evenings of 12
and 13 September 2014 starting at 6.30pm.

The Scottish Ensemble will
play three sets of music each lasting between 20-30 minutes in different spaces
around the building. Meanwhile Paterson is creating a number of new works to
complement the bold architecture of the space. The performances are part of a
season of events marking Jonathan Morton’s tenth anniversary as Artistic
Director of The Scottish Ensemble.

Jonathan Morton, Artistic Director of The Scottish Ensemble
“Toby and I
started exchanging ideas about this collaboration a few years back, and
straight away it felt like this project was going to be special,”
says Morton. “It’s such a treat to be able to bring
together exhilarating sounds with an adventurous visual artist within a this
very special space.”
“I’ve long admired Scottish Ensemble’s innovative approach to
presenting less well-known and potentially challenging work in a way that offers new perspectives on music that might be more familiar,”
adds
Paterson. “It is fantastically exciting
to be working in collaboration with Jonathan Morton and the Scottish Ensemble
to further extend this approach to include the environment in which their
performance is experienced.
An associated event
will see Professor Johnny Rodger of the Mackintosh School of Architecture at the GSA lead a walking tour of Glasgow’s
Modernist architecture. The free event at 2.30pm on Sunday 7 September will explore
architectural styles
and cultural influences of the period including the venue for 20th-Century
Perspectives
. The walk will finish at the Centre for Contemporary Arts
where participants will have the opportunity to continue a discussion with
Johnny Rodger and Toby Paterson.
Tickets for 20th-Century
