Supported by Clyde Gateway and Glasgow School of Art’s Widening Participation Department.

An exhibition of work created by  a group of young artists
from The Glasgow School of Art’s Widening Participation Programme, who worked in close
collaboration with artist and GSA alumnus, Mick Peter on The Regenerators will go on show in Glasgow’s citizenM next month.
Works on display will include preparatory
sketches and final ink drawings, sculptures, the young people’s Art Manifesto
and documentary photography of the participants throughout the project.

The artists include members of the Core Group: Luke Andrew, Caitlin Callaghan, Shannon Flockhart, Thomas Whiting, Fraser Whiting, Tegan Duffy and Kristen McNairn Erin Barclay, Tanya Belkaid, Stephanie Binns, Heather Clydesdale, Duncan Colquhoun, Scott Jaffrey, Amy Jones, Ebubechi Okey-Adibe, Evie Peat, Abbey Roy, Adam Swinscoe and Emily Walker. They were supported in making the work through workshops with Mick Peter, Sally Hackett, Gudrun Soley Sigurdardottir and Catriona Reid.

The Regenerators was commissioned by GI, Year of Young People 2018 and Festival 2018 – the cultural programme of the Glasgow 2018 European Championship. Leading artist Mick Peter worked with the young artists on his 76m long ‘billboard’ artwork which covered the empty façade of the historic Dalmarnock Gas Purifier building. The hoarding depicted, in drawings reminiscent of a newspaper strip cartoon, crumbling buildings from different eras, including a medieval castle, tenement housing as well as modern flats in the process of being demolished. The Regenerators also involved a solitary piece of ’public sculpture’ which was wheeled out ceremoniously each day before being returned to its lockup behind the new drawn façade. The project was intended to create a double take on the hoardings that surround building sites whilst inviting us to consider Glasgow’s architectural history and the loaded nature of the transformation of its industrial built heritage. The young people’s participation in the project was led by a core curatorial group of students from The Glasgow School of Art’s Widening Participation team.

Since it was founded,
citizenM has placed great import on supporting and collaborating with
locally based artists and designers, through commissioning artworks and murals
for the hotel as well as creating site-specific installations at key cultural
moments. Earlier this year, citizenM kicked off its partnership with Glasgow
International with an exhibition by the festival’s graphic design agency Cause
+ Effect alongside a series of artist panels, workshops and installations at
the hotel.
For the second
exhibition in partnership with GI, citizenM is proud to celebrate a group of 20
young artists who worked closely with Mick Peter.
“Our Widening Participation team works with young
people from across the west of Scotland giving them access to many different creative
opportunities. We are delighted that the project with GSA MFA graduate Mick
Peter which was part of the 2018 GI Festival is now going to be shown in the citizenM
which has been supporting our MFA exhibition for many years ”,
says Tom Inns, Director of The Glasgow School of
Art.
The exhibition will
be located in the comfortable and contemporary living room of citizenM, on the
corner of Hope and Renfrew streets. Visible from the front window of the hotel,
the spaces will be inclusive and welcoming to hotel guests and locals.
citizenM Chief Marketing
Officer Robin Chadha adds, “We are
delighted to continue our work with Glasgow International and support this
group of talented young artists. It is important to provide creatives with a
platform to showcase their works and we are pleased to provide a place for them
to be recognised.”

About Year of Young
People 2018
Year of Young
People 2018 is the next of the Scottish Government’s series of themed years,
following the Year of History, Heritage and Archaeology 2017. The Year of Young
People (YoYP 2018) will inspire Scotland through its young people aged 8 to 26,
celebrating their achievements, valuing their contributions to communities and
creating new opportunities for them to shine locally, nationally and globally.
Central to YoYP 2018 is a celebratory events programme that puts young people
at the heart of its development and delivery, creating new and valuable
experiences for young Scots and the wider public, with links to the inaugural
2018 European Championships.

Over 500 young
people throughout Scotland have been recruited to become YoYP 2018 Ambassadors.
Ambassadors will ensure that people and organisations in their communities know
about what’s happening and will lead on projects and activities to create
events and opportunities to celebrate young people. The Year of Young People
has six themes which were developed in co-production with young people
themselves: Participation, Education, Health and Wellbeing, Equality and
Discrimination, Enterprise and Regeneration and Culture. Further information on
what’s happening and how people can get involved can be found on the website www.yoyp2018.scot
or @YOYP2018 on Twitter.
