Born
in Lublin, Mariusz Tarkawian now lives
and works in Warsaw. This show will feature a selection from ‘Anticipation of
Art’, his ongoing series of over 600 drawings that anticipate the kind of work
well known contemporary artists might be making in the future. Acting like an encyclopaedia
of the future, the exhibition, which is sited in the gallery of an art school,
will also serve unofficially as a reference point for students to follow up on
artists with whose work they are not familiar. In a creative environment, which
is itself nurturing future practitioners, the work will also showcase the way one
artist has situated himself within a larger art world. In his 600 drawings
Tarkawian has anticipated works of artists ranging from Bill Viola, Vanessa
Beecroft and Damien Hirst to Jake & Dinos Chapman and Marina Abramovic.

‘The
Anticipation of Art’ drawings interrogate the future of contemporary art. They
ask the viewer to consider whether the progression of art practice is always
logical and where is the space for new artists? “I predict which works will be created by artists known to me in the
wider contemporary art world”, says Tarkawian. “I want to be quicker
than them and maybe steal their ideas for art. Will the art of the artists
change? Will their media and style
change?” Tarkawian also draws works which he
may create himself 20 years from now as well as works of artists who either do
not exist or who are yet to become artists, such as his own brother.
