The Deputy First Minister,

the Altyre Estate near Forres today, 14 February 2017. The campus was
officially opened last month and the visit offered Mr Swinney the opportunity to
see the state of the art premises and to learn more about the work being
undertaken there by the GSA’s Institute of Design Innovation (InDI).
Mr Swinney was taken round
the campus by Professor Irene

Islands Creative Campus, and Dr Gordon Hush, Acting Director of InDI

Mr Swinney had launched the Institute of
Design Innovation, one of the GSA’s major research centres, in 2013. The visit
enabled him to see how InDI had developed over the years.

Mr Swinney said: “The Glasgow School of
Art Highlands and Islands Creative Campus is a wonderful showcase of the
research and innovation for which Scotland is globally renowned. I was
particularly struck by the work being undertaken at the Institute of Design
Innovation, which has the potential to make a real and positive difference to
people’s lives.

“I was also impressed by the superb
state-of-the-art facilities which are home to high quality learning for
students and researchers here in Moray and across the North of Scotland.for

Among the projects presented to Mr Swinney was
Experience Lab work being carried out by GSA Research Fellow, Dr Tara French,
looking at how design can help support initiatives to increase the uptake of
breastfeeding in Scotland. Dr French’s  Experience Lab research is one of the key projects
being delivered as part of the GSA’s contribution to the Digital Health and
Care Institute.

During his visit to the GSA’s Highlands and Island’s Creative Campus Deputy First Minister, John Swinney MSP, learned more about the Prosthetic Greaves projectHere GSA Research Fellow, Dr Tara French, shows him a personalised design created by Naturally Useful.

Also presented to Mr

Prosthetic Greaves. Working with local makers from Moray and people with
lower limb prosthetics, the project explores the emotional value of different
aesthetics for prostheses. The local makers will partner with the participants
to develop a series of personalised greaves (covers for prosthetic limbs).

“We are delighted that the
Deputy First Minister was able to join us today to see our new state of the art
premises and learn more about the work that the GSA is undertaking in the
Highlands and Islands,”
said
Professor Irene McAra-McWilliam.
“Mr Swinney launched our Institute
of Design Innovation four years ago, so it was a particular pleasure to be able
to show him how much it has developed over the years both in terms of the range
of research being undertaken and our partnerships with businesses, communities
and academic institutions at home and abroad.”
Mr Swinney was joined on the visit by Mr Richard
