The
Glasgow School of Art has been shortlisted in three of the award categories for
the 2013 Arts and Business Awards. GSA partnerships with business are recognised
by one nomination in each of the Sponsorship
by a Small Business
and New or
Returning Sponsor
categories and by two nominations in the Cultural Branding category. The Glasgow
School of Art is the only academic institution to feature on the shortlists.

A collaboration between Artstore and The Glasgow
School of Art
is shortlisted for the Sponsorship
by a Small Business Award
. Undergraduate and postgraduate students were
invited to create interactive sound sculptures. The brief challenged the
artists to create pieces of work that could be manipulated by the viewers to
generate a variety of sounds. The project grew significantly when the student
artists contacted established sound-based artists to be included in the final
submission and it became a sound-art festival.

Sponsorship
of the GSA’s 2012 Degree Show and first ever Graduate Degree Show by SPIE is shortlisted in the New or Returning Sponsor Award.
This
was the first time SPIE has sponsored the arts in Scotland.
SPIE also awarded a postgraduate prize
to the most innovative project at both the 2012 and 2013 Graduate Degree Shows

Partnerships between the GSA and Dr Martens and Front Page Design are recognised in the Cultural Branding category. Coinciding with Airwair International opening a new Dr Martens store in Glasgow, a competition was launched with GSA Fashion
and Textiles students who were invited to produce a piece of work that combined
Glasgow icons with the Dr Martens brand. So successful was the collaboration
that Dr Martens went on to become headline sponsor for the 2013 Undergraduate Fashion
Show. Meanwhile, a year-long series of events under the banner ‘A Feral Studio’
was born out of a partnership between creative agency Front Page Design and The
Glasgow School of Art
. Innovative events, talks and workshops became
platforms bringing to Glasgow some of the world’s leaders in thinking around communication
design. The aim was to provide quality experiences for the next generation in
Scotland’s design community.

“Collaborations
with business are important to the GSA,”
says Professor Tom
Inns, Director of The Glasgow School of Art. “From business partnerships to creative collaborations and sponsorship,
they help our researchers to develop ground-breaking innovations and our
students to make and showcase work.”

“Front
Page’s support for the feral studio project was instrumental in getting this
embryonic, cross-departmental project up and running,
” says project leader Neil
McGuire. “It allowed us to broaden our
network of contacts and contributors, enhancing the students’ experiences, and
making links with the broader design community beyond The Glasgow School of
Art.”

Winners of the
2013 Arts & Business Awards will be announced on Wednesday 30 October 2013
