George Ridgway, a graduate of The Glasgow School of Art, has won the prestigious Fleming Wyfold Bursary at RSA New Contemporaries 2016.

James Knox, Director of the Fleming-Wyfold Art Foundation, with artist George Ridgway

The sheer range of works on display at RSA New Contemporaries is testimony to the strength of Scotland’s art schools.  Selecting a winner has been challenging but the panel unanimously decided to award the bursary to George Ridgway as one of the most innovative artists who is engaging with performance, musical composition, sculpture and drawing.  This is where the most exciting contemporary practice is happening and it is great to support a Scotland-based artist working in these disciplines at this key stage in their career.”  James Knox, Director of the Fleming-Wyfold Art Foundation.

ROYAL SCOTTISH ACADEMY OF ART & ARCHITECTURE
PRESS RELEASE
GEORGE RIDGWAY ANNOUNCED AS WINNER OF £14,000 FLEMING WYFOLD BURSARY AT RSA NEW CONTEMPORARIES 2016
Bursary and additional awards at RSA New Contemporaries opening in Edinburgh provide critical support for emerging Scottish artists.
4 March, Edinburgh – At the opening ceremony of Royal Scottish Academy (RSA) New Contemporaries, the Fleming-Wyfold Art Foundation, custodians of the Fleming Collection in London, awarded Glasgow School of Art graduate George Ridgway with the Fleming-Wyfold Bursary, a significant award of £10,000, with an additional £4,000 also available to support their production costs for the next year. Their work is featured in the current RSA New Contemporaries exhibition alongside 60 selected graduates from the 2015 degree shows of Scotland’s art and architecture schools.  Further awards with a combined value exceeding £20,000 were also presented during the exciting exhibition launch event (please see list in notes below).
A unique aspect of the Fleming-Wyfold Bursary is the mentoring scheme that sees established curator Susanna Beaumont work with the winning artist for a year.  Beaumont has recently completed working with last year’s winner Edward Humphrey and also worked with winners of the inaugural award in 2014, The Brownlee Brothers.  The Fleming-Wyfold Bursary selection panel included: James Knox (Director at the Fleming-Wyfold Art Foundation), Susanna Beaumont (curator), Vincent Honoré (Director of David Roberts Art Foundation), Bill Smith (previously of the Fleming Collection) and Kevin Harman (Edinburgh-based artist).

Set up in 2009 by the Royal Scottish Academy, RSA New Contemporaries is an annual exhibition of selected graduates from Scotland’s art and architecture schools. These emerging artists are given the opportunity to launch their career at the prestigious RSA galleries by exhibiting a substantial body of new work; including painting, sculpture, film making, photography, printmaking, architecture, performance and installation.  Further exhibition awards with a combined value exceeding £20,000 have been disbursed in addition to the Fleming-Wyfold Bursary – please see list below.
Many past exhibitors of RSA New Contemporaries have since taken part in major national exhibitions and have secured gallery representation across the UK and further afield.  Rachel Maclean was an exhibitor and award winner at RSA New Contemporaries 2010 and is the current poster star of the British Art Show 8.
As part of the partnership with the RSA, the Fleming-Wyfold Art Foundation will stage the third annual exhibition of “New Scottish Artists: a Royal Scottish Academy exhibition supported by the Fleming-Wyfold Art Foundation with the world-renowned DRAF (the David Roberts Art Foundation) which will host the exhibition in Camden, London from 21 April to 7 May.  This exciting exhibition will bring selected works from the annual Edinburgh-based RSA New Contemporaries to London for the first time, providing a significant platform for these emerging artists.  New Scottish Artists will feature the work of the Fleming-Wyfold Bursary winner.
“I am delighted that the The Fleming-Wyfold Bursary is going from strength to strength, reinforcing our role of cultural diplomacy on behalf of the RSA and emerging Scottish Artists outside Scotland.” Rory Fleming, Chairman of the Fleming-Wyfold Art Foundation.

About the Fleming Collection and the Fleming-Wyfold Foundation:
The Fleming Collection, which is widely regarded as one of the finest collections of Scottish Art in private hands, began in 1968 when Flemings, the former merchant bank, moved into new offices in London. As a commemoration of the Scottish origins of Flemings, founded by Robert Fleming in Dundee, the Board began to acquire works by Scottish artists or of Scottish scenes depicted by any artist. Today the collection comprises of works dating from 1770 to the present day, including the two iconic images of The Highland Clearances, Thomas Faed’s ‘The Last of The Clan’ and John Watson Nicol’s ‘Lochaber No More.’ A group of paintings by the Glasgow Boys include work by Lavery, Guthrie, Walton, Nairn and Kennedy. Additionally, the collection holds major paintings by all four Scottish Colourists, a large number of works by Anne Redpath alongside her contemporaries John Maxwell and William Gillies, and many other gems. The Collection plays a pivotal ambassadorial role in promoting Scottish Art to London and beyond.
In conjunction with the sale of the bank in 2000, the Collection was sold to the Fleming-Wyfold Art Foundation.  The Wyfold name was adjoined to commemorate the life of the last Lord Wyfold, a grandson of Robert Fleming.  The Foundation also publishes The Scottish Art News biannually, a highly-regarded publication with exhibition reviews and previews, book reviews, art market round up and listings and new developments within the visual arts.www.flemingcollection.co.uk
