Staff, students and
graduates took to the catwalk today, 21 March 2017, as the GSA marked 70 years
of undergraduate Fashion Show. Among the models was Jill Gibson, who had helped
to run Fashion Show in the Vic bar in 1985, GSA’s Head of Silversmithing and
Jewellery, Helen Marriott, and recent MLItt in Fine Art graduate, 70-year old
Norman Sutton-Hibbert. The catwalk shows were staged in The Art
School (affectionately know as “the Vic”) as so many have been over the years. A
shop featuring accessories by the young designers opened in the Reid Building at
2pm today and will be open from 10am -10pm tomorrow.

the previous seventy years in terms of Social and Political changes, Science and
Technology, Music, Film and Television as well as Art, Literature and
Architecture.

The 2017 third year
Fashion & Textiles cohort comprises 11 Fashion Design and around 30 Textile
Design students each of whom showed three thematically linked outfits. UK
designers showing their collections hailed from as far south as Cornwall and as
far north as the Shetland Islands, with international students coming from as a
field as Canada, China and South Korea, as well as across Europe.

The aspirational
designers took their own individual approach to the 1947 – 2017 brief with
some being influenced by specific decades like the 60’s or 50’s; some making a
political statement about gender appropriation within fashion and what we wear /
have worn in the past; and others simply selecting a style or movement from the
past 70 years and re-interpreting it.
