Illustration student Holly Fearon explores inequality and social hierarchies within society in her practice. Inspired by previous research, exploring poverty proofing within primary schools, she has created a children’s book to help educate children on the different experiences of their classmates, and to make sure all social classes are represent and given a voice. In the “Pecking Order” – 3 animations that portray relatable narratives that also inform the audience – Holly has taken her own experience as a starting point and focuses in particular on students from working class backgrounds entering higher education.

Photography specialist Dominic Manderson combines  interests in portraiture and  documentary photography, in particular, questioning masculinity within the modern age as well as exploring fashion and editorial work. In a series of striking images he documents the annual game of Royal Shrovetide Football in the quiet town of Ashbourne – a brutal yet, significant event for locals where over two days, the town is divided by the river into two teams, with goals spanning a stretch of three miles. With its limited rules, hundreds of men sprawl in huddles across the Derbyshire town, brawling for a touch of the ball. With younger generations in particular, in the context of a society that now questions norms specific to gender more than ever, will they emulate the traditions of the past to keep this game alive?

Meanwhile Joe Habben whose photographic projects focus on human intervention, exploring globalisation and public space, presents In Moleca a series of evocative images of Venice. In Moleca documents the events and effects of the ‘Acqua Alta’ (high-water) which happens annually in Venice. This tidal activity is a natural occurrence, however in recent decades it has been aggravated by the effects of human activity. Mass-tourism, global warming, urban expansion and industrialisation are damaging factors which have influenced the deterioration of the Venetian lagoon, and this has led to the increasing tide and subsidence of the ‘floating city’. Exploring issues caused by human intervention; Joe’s images highlight the tender balance between urban inhabitants and the environment.

Image: Bianca Winberg’s Templeton typeface

Graphic Design student Bianca Winberg has taken inspiration from one of Glasgow’s historic companies – Templeton who manufactured carpets in the city until the late 1970s. She has created a new typeface – TEMPLETON. An uppercase-only typeface, it’s main source of inspiration is the ‘T’ which can be seen in the company’s old logo together with the Arts and Crafts movement.

In Balsyn, meanwhile, Bel Doherty aims to rebrand the digital scent industry into something we could imagine using in our daily lives in the future. With a number of e-scent products being produced over the last few decades ultimately failing to do our olfactory systems justice, and some products such as iSmell joining the list of ’25 Worst Tech Products of All Time’ she proposes a new approach based on the theory of vibration of olfaction.

See full details of off all these projects and more on the Graduate Showcase 2020 digital platform. https://gsashowcase.net. The graduating students will be able to develop their profiles on the platform for the next twelve months adding further work as it is produced.
