The Glasgow School of Art had a golden night at the 2020 jewellery “Oscars” picking up no fewer than eight awards. The Goldsmiths’ Craft and Design awards, which are the only peer reviewed technical and creative awards in the UK, were presented at a glittering ceremony in the spectacular Goldsmiths Hall in the City of London.
Third year Silversmithing & Jewellery student, Scott Smith, scooped the gold medal in the Champagne Gosset award for his champagne flute whilst Head of Silversmithing & Jewellery, Anna Gordon, won gold in a special award category: Wire Innovation. Anna also picked up silver in the jewellery craft category – a special award designed to reward high quality hand craft skills demonstrated on fine jewellery –  for the same piece.
Elsewhere Silversmithing & Jewellery student Andrew Miller McNab won silver for his rhinoceros design in the Medal Design category. In keeping with the a highly topical theme of the environment entrants for this award were asked to research the most endangered animal species and to design an art medal which would emphasise the plight of the species whilst making a strong case for its preservation.  Final year Silversmithing & Jewellery student  Yitong Zhang picked up bronze in the Small Works category.
Meanwhile, GSA tutor, Andrew Lamb, picked up two awards: silver in the Wire Innovation category and bronze in the Technical Innovation category, an award that celebrates the use and contribution that technology is making in jewellery, objects and silversmithing in the craft and industry.
All the shortlisted designs are on show at the Goldsmiths Hall until today. The exhibition will then move to Birmingham Assay Office for a first ever showing outside London. It will run in Birmingham from Wednesday 11 March – Thursday 26 March 2020.
