The Reid Building,
part of a £50m development of The Glasgow School of Art’s Garnethill campus,
has won the AJ100 Building of the Year Award 2014. Sponsored by Philips, the annual award is given in
recognition of the finest building completed by any of the UK’s top 100
practices during the past year. The news was announced at a ceremony in
London last night (22 May 2014). The Reid Building was the unanimous choice of
the judges. It beat off competition from eight other shortlisted designs by
leading architectural practices including Foster + Partners (AJ100 Practice of the Year
winner) and Hopkins Architects.

“This is terrific news,” says Professor Tom Inns, Director of The
Glasgow School of Art. “It is a great accolade both for the architects and the
GSA that the building has been recognised by the AJ in their prestigious awards.”

“JM Architects’ role in
making this bold, complex building should be recognized,” says Rory Olcayto, acting editor of the AJ. The role of executive and associate
architects in the creation of good and great buildings needs to be more fairly
acknowledged. The AJ and its jury for this award category is proud to take this

The Reid Building
Following an Estates
Review which established, with the exception of the Mackintosh Building, that
the Glasgow School of Art’s Garnethill estate (nine separate buildings) was no
longer fit for purpose, a plan was developed to create a more focused campus
and provide the GSA with world class spaces. The aim of Phase 1 of the plan was
to create a new, purpose-built academic building for the School of Design,
which would also include workshops, lecture facilities, communal student areas
and exhibition spaces for the School as a whole, together with a new visitor
centre, The Window on Mackintosh. Steven Holl Architects of New York, in
association with Glasgow-based JM Architects and Arup Engineering, won an
international competition to design and deliver the new building in September
2009. It was named the Reid Building in honour of Dame Seona Reid, the GSA’s
first female Director, who stood down after 13 years in the post in the summer
of 2013. The budget for the entire Phase 1 project was £50m and has been made
possible by a grant from the Scottish Funding Council.
