China
success for jewellery designer, Jonathan Boyd

Jewellery designer Jonathan Boyd added to his many awards yesterday
when he won the silver prize at a prestigious exhibition in Beijing with his
silver brooch, Clyde Built. Boyd, who
is a lecturer in Silversmithing and Jewellery at the GSA, is among the 184
international designers currently showing work in the 2013 Beijing
International Contemporary Metal Art Exhibition: Pushing Boundaries & Chasing Challenges.

Jonathan Boyd won the silver prize for Clyde Built, an oxidized silver brooch

Boyd was also one of only ten designers from the UK, Sweden, Japan,
Korea and USA selected to present their work to an invited audience and to take
part in a Q&A session with students and the media.

The simple lines of the sculptural chain link brooch for which
Jonathan Boyd won the award belie the complex system of moulding, casting and oxidising
that went into creating the piece, which will grow over time into an 18-link work.
The brooch is from of a collection of artefacts
that are
inspired by Boyd’s interest in language, with
each link featuring overlapped words representing multiple,
simultaneous conversations. Clyde Built
was designed by Boyd
as part of a research project into the
application of 3D printing, complex sprung systems and digital technology in
jewellery and that explores the relationship between object and language.

The 5th International Contemporary Metal Art Exhibition
runs in the
Beijing World Art Museum, China Millennium Monument until 17 November
2013.
