Some
of the world’s most talented musicians, actors, film-makers and artists were
recognised in the 2015 South Bank Sky Arts Awards at a glittering ceremony in London’s
West End this evening, Sunday 7 June 2015. Each of the winners received a very
special award designed by 22-year Miriam Woolf from London, a S
ilvermsithing & Jewellery student at The Glasgow School of Art.

The awards were made by Miriam together with GSA Silvermsithing & Jewellery staff who last year made the iconic Commonwealth
Games medals.
Each award
is made from a section of copper tube which has been crushed using a hydraulic
press. The pressed copper was then powder coated in white. Meanwhile, a
transparent acrylic base, bearing the name of the winner, was laser engraved with
the text and painted red.

The design was influenced by my current work
in jewellery and object,” explains Miriam. “My research investigates methods of
controlling the organic and unpredictable process of crushing.

Although each award has been made to the same
design, because of the organic nature of the crushing process each one is
slightly different and thus completely unique.”
Each year the South Bank Sky Arts
Awards winners are presented with an award created by a British artist, with
past designers including Anish Kapoor, Sir Peter Blake and Libby Finks (a
student at the Royal College of Art).
“The award is the centrepiece of this annual event,” says Melvyn
Bragg, host of the South Bank Sky Arts Awards. “This year we wanted to return to celebrating the work of students and
it seemed a particularly apt time to come to The Glasgow School of Art. I
am sure that the winners will be honoured to receive an example of work from
the formidably talented Glasgow School of Art.”
We are delighted that our students had the opportunity to design this
prestigious award,”
adds Professor Tom Inns, Director of The Glasgow
School of Art. “All 76 students on the
Silversmithing & Jewellery programme were invited to respond to the brief.
We had a wide range of creative proposals from which Miriam Woolf’s fascinating
design emerged as the winner.”
Twelve awards – across Dance,
Opera, Comedy, TV Drama, Literature, Classical Music, Pop, Film, Visual Art,
Theatre, The Times Breakthrough Award and The Outstanding Achievement Award – were
presented this evening.
Former winners of South Bank Sky
Arts Awards include Dame Helen Mirren, Grayson Perry, J K Rowling, Tom
