The 2017 third year Fashion
& Textiles cohort comprises 11 Fashion Design and around 30 Textile Design
students each of whom will showcase three outfits in the show. The aspirational
designers have taken their own individual approach to the brief with some being
influenced by specific decades like the 60’s or 50’s; some making a political
statement about gender appropriation within fashion and what we wear / have
worn in the past; and others simply selecting a style or movement from the past
70 years and re-interpreting it.

Among the Textile
Design students knitters and weavers have been busy with their yarns forming
and constructing their own fabrics, intertwining the design work with
construction of the fabric. Print and embroidery specialists have been
manipulating pre-existing fabric and materials to express their notion of
fabric design and how it can be placed on the body. Fashion Design students
meanwhile have been focusing on silhouette and construction.

“The
70th anniversary of the Fashion Show has offered students the
opportunity to explore history through design,” says
Jimmy Stephen-Cran, Head of Fashion and Textiles. “Some have used history like a dressing up box, shamelessly borrowing
from the past whereas others have used history as a source to innovate.”
