Brand Archaeology:
Building New Brands: Dr Gordon Hush in conversation with Pedro AImeida,
Brands are about emotions with logos, jingles and advertising of
brands from the past often generating memories that we associate with something
positive in our lives.  Considering how Burberry used the company’s
historic and easily recognisable styling for their new marketing, or how Old
Spice built on the iconic adverts from the 1970s – think surfing and Carmina
Burana – or the enduring charm of the Dulux dog, it becomes clear that throwing
out old imagery may not always be the most appropriate approach.  Dr Gordon
Hush, Director of the GSA’s Institute of Design innovation and Pedro
Imeida, Assistant Professor of Design at the University of Aveiro,
Portugal will examine how much historical and cultural memory can be lost
with a brand’s imagery, how brands can demonstrate ‘authenticity’ and how
locally specific brands can inspire cultural development.

Future Proofing the Past:
How Can Museums and Heritage Organisations Ensure Future Sustainability
Museums and heritage organisations have traditionally been developed
around their physical location.  However, the building can often be a
limiting factor. Location, the size of the building, opening hours, staffing
numbers and volunteers, and accessibility challenges will all have direct
impact on just how many visitors can ever visit.  This panel will look at
how technology can improve the visitor experience and what a museum without
walls might be like.  How can technology offer engagement with a whole
world of potential new customers, who may never be able to visit physically,
and turn that into income? Dr Stuart Jeffrey, Research Fellow in International
Heritage Visualisation will bring his significant experience in the subject to
the panel discussion which will be Chaired by Fiona Hyslop MSP.

Association, The Power of
Provenance – “In Conversation” with Matteo Alessi and Harris Tweed
Technology has opened up increased choice for customers both in
terms of what products they buy and how they buy them.  In this
competitive market place how can a producer ensure that their products have
that little something extra to help attract the consumer?  Arguably the ‘story’
is as important as the product itself.  Matteo Alessi of Italian design
giants, Alessi, and Lorna MacAulay of the Harris Tweed Association, will look
at the importance of provenance to their businesses, and consider how they have
kept their products fresh without losing heritage and tradition. The event will
be hosted by Don McIntyre, Design Director at the GSA’s Institute of Design
Innovation.

Virtual Reality: Turning
The Tech Into Business Sense
Forget the hype. Virtual reality isn’t the next big thing, it’s
already here. But what can it do for you? Although games and movies have
grabbed the headlines it is VR which is fundamentally changing all of the
creative industries. The panel will explore the reality behind they hype and
explain why we should all learn more about the VR revolution. Dr Matthieu
Poyade, Research Fellow in 3D Programming in SimVis, will bring his
considerable expertise in Gaming and Medical Visualisation to the panel
discussion.
