The Glasgow School of Art (GSA) is deeply saddened to learn of the death of Pam Hogg, an internationally recognised fashion designer, artist and musician, and alumna of the School. Pam Hogg studied Fine Art and Printed Textiles at the GSA, graduating in 1976. Launching her first collection in 1981, she grew to become a profoundly influential figure in the world of fashion.
Working largely independently from her studio – often making pieces herself – she developed a distinctive visual language that redefined the possibilities of fashion as a space for performance, identity and self‑determination, showing collections regularly at London Fashion Week and dressing some of the most influential cultural figures of her generation.
“Pam was a singular presence within British fashion, design, music and art for more than 40 years and one of the catalysts of the huge shift in British culture from the late 1970s, developing an approach to design that crossed over fashion, popular culture, music and the club scene.” says Prof. Penny Macbeth, Director and Principal of The Glasgow School of Art.
“On receiving her Honorary Doctorate from the GSA in 2016, Pam reflected that it was Glasgow that gave her her identity, character and inspiration. Graduating in 1976 from Fine Art and Printed Textiles and awarded the Newbery Medal, the highest student award, we remain incredibly proud of her and her achievements throughout her career. She was and will continue to be an inspiration to future generations of students and designers.”
At this sad time, the thoughts of the GSA community are with her family, friends and many collaborators.
ENDS.
