The Glasgow School of Art rises into the Global Top 10 in the latest QS 2026 World University Subject Rankings, reinforcing Glasgow’s position as a world-leading creative powerhouse.
The Glasgow School of Art’s (GSA) position as an international leader in art and design, education and research has been reinforced once again with the publication of the QS 2026 World University Subject rankings today, Wednesday 25 March. The GSA has surged four places to eighth in the world in the highly influential global rankings, cementing its position as one of the world’s leading institutions for art and design.
The only institution in Scotland in the global top 10 for art and design and one of only three institutions within the UK, the GSA is ranked as one of the world’s leading creative institutions alongside The New School in New York, Rhode Island School of Design, MIT, and the Pratt Institute of New York; and European universities and art schools including Politecnico di Milano, Aalto University and Design Academy Eindhoven.
The GSA’s international and UK-leading ranking reinforces Glasgow’s European standing as one of the UK’s leading cultural and creative economies, and the significant relationship between its education, creative and cultural sectors. This includes contemporary fine art, digital technology, filmmaking, performance, music, fashion, and transformative design. It is a major centre of production, making, and innovation, adding a unique dimension to its cultural and economic character.
The GSA sits at the heart of a ‘creative supercluster’ in Glasgow; a thriving, interdependent cultural economy that is collaborative and globally respected. Alongside major institutions including the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, the Scottish Opera, the National Theatre of Scotland, as well as a host of influential grassroots studio spaces and production and innovation complexes like The Whisky Bond, Glasgow Sculpture Studios, Civic House, and the Glue Factory, Glasgow is a city that houses production and making centres, from national companies to individual artists, at a scale that exists in no other UK city outside of London.
Commenting on the latest QS global ranking, Professor Penny Macbeth, Director and Principal of The Glasgow School of Art said:
“The QS rankings are one of the most influential measures of global Higher Education. Our rise into the global top 10 is a powerful endorsement of the GSA’s international standing and of the extraordinary talent, dedication and ambition of our students, staff and graduates.
These rankings matter because they reflect not only the quality of what we do, but the strength of the ecosystem of which we are a part. The GSA sits within the critical mass of cultural and creative production within the city – a city of makers, producers and innovators bringing huge benefits both to Glasgow’s economy and the city’s global reputation as a creative centre of production. We also provide significant social impacts to the communities in Glasgow and across Scotland that we work with.
The opportunity now is to build on this global recognition — to work collectively across the city to ensure that Glasgow continues to thrive as a world-leading creative and cultural centre.”
Cllr Susan Aitken, Leader of Glasgow City Council said:
“The Glasgow School of Art’s continued global success is hugely important for the city. World-class institutions like the GSA help attract international talent, support the growth of creative businesses, and strengthen Glasgow’s reputation as a centre for creative and cultural production. What makes this particularly significant is that this success is reflective of a wider critical ecosystem in the city — one that connects education, industry and creative and cultural production in a way that is distinctive to Glasgow.”
